十八梯 literally means “Eighteen steps”, but actually there are more than eighteen steps. Shibati is one of the most representative traditional style districts in Chongqing. It used to be an important passage connecting the top of the Yuzhong Peninsula (Tongyuanmen) with the Yangtze River dock (lower half of the city), and gathered teahouses, stilt houses, and time-honored brands. It witnessed the tragic WWII bombing of Chongqing, and some air-raid shelters still exist.
